US (FL): Young trees with HLB; brown rot in Gulf Area | 12-12-2011

Two citrus growers this week told fellow growers that young trees they’ve planted in recent years are getting infected with HLB, or citrus greening disease, at a high rate.

That’s causing Ben Hill Griffin Incorporated production manager Steve Farr and Orange-Co vice president Jerry Newlin to wonder if they can raise sufficient numbers of young trees to maturity. Farr and Newlin made their comments while serving on a panel during a Citrus Research Field Day at Lake Alfred. University of Florida researcher Tim Spann, who presided over the panel, concurs with Farr and Newlin’s observations, and elaborates on the young tree problem.
